Land Cover
Canada’s surface is covered by water, various types of vegetation, rocks, ice and built-up areas. Natural Resources Canada produces land cover maps for the entire Canadian landmass using satellite images. A better knowledge of Canada’s land cover enables us to:
- Better prepare for emergencies
- Make the best use of natural resources
- Support studies on natural environments
- Understand the impacts of climate change
Assessing changes between 2010 and 2020
Using data cube technology, changes in Canada’s land cover for different time periods can be displayed directly in a web browser. Move the time slider in the map below to explore the changes in land cover between 2010 (left) and 2020 (right).

Click on the button to see the map content on the full page.
Use the button to view available layers. Select the checkbox for a layer to hide or display it.
Click and drag the bar in the middle to see the changes.
